Season 2, Episode 2 – Two queens and a hive split

During a follow-up inspection, two queens were found in one hive. One was a newly emerged queen and another was discovered inside a capped queen cell. The second queen was moved into a new hive along with brood and honey, creating a second colony.

Site conditions – drainage and access

Alongside the beekeeping work, we have identified wider site conditions that affect access and maintenance. A natural spring runs through part of the allotments and heavy rain can cause water to move across plots. Vehicle turning has also created ruts that worsen the spread of water.

We are reviewing practical improvements to turning points and drainage so the site is better protected during wet weather.

Funding secured

We were awarded £6,375 from The National Lottery Community Fund. The funding supports the setup of hives, beekeeping training, protective clothing, honey extraction equipment and basic safety improvements for the apiary area.
